日本の音楽雑誌やテレビ・ラジオなどで紹介されないようなアーチストにたどり着くには、何らかの助けが必要です。

今回のポール・シーベル(Paul Siebel)もそんな中の一人です。昔よく聞いていたリンダ・ロンシュタット(Linda Ronstadt)がカバーしていたのを聞いて、神田は神保町を回りました。

とある中古レコード店でポール・シーベルの輸入版ＬＰを見つけては、ひとり悦に入り、「しめしめ。ポール・シーベルを知っているのは日本では俺ぐらいだろう。よし、もう少し状態のいいのを別の店で探すとするか」なんて、店を１０軒近く回って戻ってくると、もうない。ない。

その後、手に入れたのは数年経ってからのことでした。

ランディー・ニューマン(Randy Newman)といったら、「皮肉屋さん」とか「社会風刺家」といわれています。いわれています、といっても、日本ではそれほど言われていません。

タイトルから分かるのは「船で海を渡っていく」ということですが、登場人物は考えるしかありません。「アメリカに行くといいことが待ってるぞ」と言っているのは誰か、サルをたとえに出されて、「アメリカで幸せになろうぜ」と言われているのは誰か、見当をつけなければなりません。

この歌、奴隷制度を描いたもののようです。到着地として登場するサウス・カロライナ州チャールストン湾は、南北戦争の火蓋が切られた地であり、その背景も奴隷制度が大きくかかわっているようです。
