The Shoals Of Herring

TITLE: The Shoals Of Herring　（ザ・ショールズ・オブ・ヘリング）

イングランド東岸の元漁師から聞き取り調査をして、イワン・マッコールがまとめた曲です。その様子はBBCの『シンギング・ザ・フィッシング』というドキュメンタリーになって1960年に放送されたそうです。

ニシンといえば、ソーラン節か御殿が連想されます。日本もイングランドもニシン漁には適した位置にあるといえるでしょうが、カモメにきいたのもニシン御殿が建ったのも過去のこと。

漁獲量は明治時代を最盛期に見る影もなく減りました。自分の食べる分だけとって．．．というわけにはいきません。

ただ、海に生きる海の男は、一生海に生きなければならないのでしょう。海が怒ろうが、荒れ狂おうが、襲ってこようが、すべてを承知で生きていくんだと思います。

the Dover Straits　［ザ・ドーバー・ストレイツ］：　ドーバー海峡、イギリスとフランスを挟む海峡の中でも狭くなった箇所、よくあることだが、フランス側からはカレー海峡と呼ばれる
the Faroe Islands　［ザ・フェロー・アイランズ］：　フェロー諸島、現在デンマークの自治領でスコットランド、ノルウェー、アイスランドの北大西洋上中間地点にある複数の島

DNAに刻み込まれているからかどうかはわかりませんが、女の子は学校であったことを逐一お母さんに報告することが多いようです。

気になる子にちょっかいを出す男の子、いろんな子にちょっかいを出される可愛い女の子、そんな遊びから好きな子を見つけていく、ほほえましい光景です。

スコットランドでは、湖のことを loch （ロッホ）、山のことを ben （ベン）というそうです。ローモンド湖はロッホ・ローモンド(Loch Lomond)に、ネヴィス山はベン・ネヴィス(Ben Nevis)になります。

ちなみに、ネッシーでおなじみのネス湖もスコットランドにあるのですが、こちらはロッホ・ネス(Loch Ness)と呼ばれています。

17世紀から18世紀にかけて、スコットランドではいろいろなことが起こり、スコットランド王ジェームス7世が追い出されて、代わりにドイツから新しい国王がやってきます。その後、議会は自国を金で売ってしまいます。その結果、スコットランドは大英帝国の一部となってしまいました。

これじゃあやってられない、といったかどうかはさておき、ジェームス支持者、つまりジャコバイトの皆様が反旗を翻し、チャールズ皇太子とともにイングランドに攻め入るのですが、これもうまくいきませんでした。

そして、現在に至ります。早く独立したい、と思っている人が少なからぬ数いることも納得至極です。

電線の鳥で思い出すのは、伊東四郎かレナード・コーエン(Leonard Cohen)といっても過言ではないでしょう。レナード・コーエンは1934年生まれのカナダの詩人であり、かつシンガー・ソングライターとしても活躍しています。

1966年にリリースされたジュディー・コリンズ(Judy Collins)のLP『イン・マイ・ライフ』に収録されていたのがレナード・コーエンの「スザンヌ」という曲でした。

これがきっかけとなり、レナード・コーエンは注目されるようになったようです。

私が最初に「バード・オン・ザ・ワイアー」を聴いたのがティム・ハーディン(Tim Hardin)でした。これがきっかけとなり、レナード・コーエンのLPを何枚か買ったのを覚えています。
