TITLE: Pancho And Lefty （パンチョ・アンド・レフティー）

pass away（通り過ぎて遠くに行く）、kick the bucket（バケツを蹴る）、bite the dust（ほこりを噛む）など、「死ぬ」という意味の、英語での婉曲表現です。今回のパンチョ・アンド・レフティー(Pancho And Lefty)にも、その中の一つbite the dustがthe dust that Pancho bit（パンチョが噛んだほこり）という箇所にでてきます。
詩篇72編9章にこうあります。
The desert tribes will bow before him and his enemies will lick the dust.
（砂漠の民は彼の前で頭を垂れ、彼の敵は砂埃をなめることになる。）
lickがどうやってbiteに転じたかは生きていなかったので知りませんが、辞書には「死ぬ」という意味の婉曲表現である、と記載されるまでになりました。
さて、ほこりを噛んだのはパンチョ、この世に残ったレフティーにも祈りを捧げてくれ、仕方なかったんだ、と続いています。
心が優しいのはタウンズ・ヴァン・ザントだと思います。

The poets tell how Pancho fell
Lefty’s livin’ in a cheap hotel
The desert’s quiet and Cleveland’s cold
So the story ends we’re told

南はメキシコ砂漠の地
死に際の言葉は誰も聞かず
でもことの行方はこんな感じ
保安官もみんな言ってる

ただ泳がせてるだけだって

ブルースが歌えないレフティーは
昔みたいに一晩中は無理だ
パンチョが南でくたばっちまい
結局レフティーに軍配があがる
パンチョが大地に埋められた日
レフティーはひとりオハイオに向かってく
パンでも買って生きてくのか
そんなことは誰も知らない
保安官もみんな言ってる
いつでも捕まえられたって
ただ泳がせてるだけだって

レフティーは木賃宿に仮住まい
音のない砂漠とつめたいクリーブランド
そんな最後で話は終わる
パンチョに祈りを捧げてほしいが
