TITLE: The Shoals Of Herring　（ザ・ショールズ・オブ・ヘリング）

イングランド東岸の元漁師から聞き取り調査をして、イワン・マッコールがまとめた曲です。その様子はBBCの『シンギング・ザ・フィッシング』というドキュメンタリーになって1960年に放送されたそうです。

ニシンといえば、ソーラン節か御殿が連想されます。日本もイングランドもニシン漁には適した位置にあるといえるでしょうが、カモメにきいたのもニシン御殿が建ったのも過去のこと。

漁獲量は明治時代を最盛期に見る影もなく減りました。自分の食べる分だけとって．．．というわけにはいきません。

ただ、海に生きる海の男は、一生海に生きなければならないのでしょう。海が怒ろうが、荒れ狂おうが、襲ってこようが、すべてを承知で生きていくんだと思います。

the Dover Straits　［ザ・ドーバー・ストレイツ］：　ドーバー海峡、イギリスとフランスを挟む海峡の中でも狭くなった箇所、よくあることだが、フランス側からはカレー海峡と呼ばれる
the Faroe Islands　［ザ・フェロー・アイランズ］：　フェロー諸島、現在デンマークの自治領でスコットランド、ノルウェー、アイスランドの北大西洋上中間地点にある複数の島

TITLE: Finnegan’s Wake　（フィネガンズ・ウェイク）

アイルランドが誇る作家ジェームス・ジョイス(James Joyce)の『フィネガンズ・ウェイク(Finnegans Wake)』のもとになったのが、この「フィネガンズ・ウェイク(Finnegan’s Wake)」です。

私の手元にある600ページを超える分厚い本は1ページ目で時間が止まりました。そして、最後のページを見てしまいました。

A way a lone a last a loved a long theで終わっています。『ア・ウェー、ア・ローン、ア・ラースト、ア・ラーブド、ア・ローング』、ここまでは口から音を出していて多少は気持ちがいいのですが、そして、『ザ』で「終わる」、いや終わっていません。

いや、正確に言えば、私ごときには何がなんだかさっぱりわかりません。

「典型的」愛蘭土人ティム・フィネガンはレンガ職人、いつもいっぱいひっかけて仕事に出るのですが、二日酔いだったのか梯子から落ちて頭蓋骨骨折により臨終を迎えます。

通夜がとりおこなわれるのですが、アイルランドの通夜って日本と似ているかもしれません。最初こそ涙かもしれませんが、酒が入れば、それはそれ、ドンちゃん騒ぎも始まります。その上、喧嘩が始まってもおかしくありません。

ぐっすり眠るフィネガン、酒をかけられてはおちおち死んでもいられない。すくっと立ち上がる．．．そんな話です。

TITLE: Goodnight Irene　（グッドナイト・アイリーン）
AUTHOR: Huddie Ledbetter　（ヒューディー・レッドベター）
PERFORMER: Leadbelly　（レッドベリー）

ザ・ウィーバーズ(The Weavers)のフレッド・ヘラーマン(Fred Hellerman)によると、この歌は過酷な人生を歩んだヒューディー・レッドベターの手によるものだそうです。

その名もレッドベリー(Leadbelly)、「鉛(lead)の腹(belly)」と豪快なのですが、歌は恋に敗れる男の気持ちを歌ったものです。

そのレッドベリーは、筋萎縮性側索硬化症(ALS)で1949年帰らぬ人となります。このグッドナイト・アイリーンがビルボード・チャートを賑わすのは1950年になってからなので、ヒットを見ぬまま旅立っていったということになります。

とにかく、数え切れないぐらいのカバーがあります。
