ランディー・ニューマン(Randy Newman)が作る曲には、聞く人が聞いたら嫌悪感を催さずにはいられないほどのものもあります。「ショート・ピープル(Short People)」という商業的には成功を収めた曲がありますが、これなどは「差別」だと感じる人もいるかもしれません。

ただ、ランディー・ニューマンの曲は聞けば聞くほど、そんなちっぽけなことをしているのではなく、もっと「大きい」ものに立ち向かっているような気がしてならないのです。

この「ポリティカル・サイエンス(Political Science)」にしても、本人曰く、アメリカの外交政策らしいのですが、アメリカが好きだからこそ、アメリカ人だからこそ、という気がしてなりません。

とにかく、この格好いい素直な皮肉屋さんの曲を聞いてみてください。

ランディー・ニューマン(Randy Newman)といったら、「皮肉屋さん」とか「社会風刺家」といわれています。いわれています、といっても、日本ではそれほど言われていません。

タイトルから分かるのは「船で海を渡っていく」ということですが、登場人物は考えるしかありません。「アメリカに行くといいことが待ってるぞ」と言っているのは誰か、サルをたとえに出されて、「アメリカで幸せになろうぜ」と言われているのは誰か、見当をつけなければなりません。

この歌、奴隷制度を描いたもののようです。到着地として登場するサウス・カロライナ州チャールストン湾は、南北戦争の火蓋が切られた地であり、その背景も奴隷制度が大きくかかわっているようです。
