今からどれぐらい前でしょうか、御茶ノ水から神保町にかけてブラブラ歩いていたときのこと、とある一軒の中古レコード店に入りました。

地下にあるその店は非常に狭く、薄暗い感じでした。ところが、置いてあるレコードはどれも目を引くものばかりで、しかも、ほとんどが原盤で状態もいい。オルマナック・シンガーズ(The Almanac Singers)かウィーバーズ(The Weavers)を買ったように記憶しています。

何度か通ううちに、そこのマスターと一言二言話をするようになって、薦められたのがタウンズ・ヴァン・ザント(Townes Van Zandt)だったのです。名前も聞いたことがないのに試聴後にLPを買ってしまいました。

それ以降、全LPを買ったことは必然だったのでしょうか。

それ以前に聞いていたシンガーソングライターといえば、ティム・ハーディン(Tim Hardin)やランディー・ニューマン(Randy Newman)、ウォーレン・ジヴォン(Warren Zevon)などでしたから、少々毛色の違う「仲間」が増えたという意識があったのを覚えています。

タウンズ・ヴァン・ザントは1944年テキサス生まれで、惜しくも21世紀を待たずして1997年にこの世を去っています。
