ナイチンゲール、またの名を小夜啼鳥（さよなきどり）というらしいのですが、実際には目にしたことがありません。あるいは、目にしていても、気づいていなかっただけかもしれません。

歌声もすばらしいそうなのですが、聞いたことがありません。残念です。

兵隊さんに求婚するも妻がいる身と断られてしまうだけでなく、うちの女房は美しいと自慢までされてしまいます。

もてる男はこのように常にもてているのでしょう。

散歩に出かけた5月の朝のことでした
ふざけて道からはずれた若い二人は
愛想がよくて見た目も可愛い彼女と
勇ましそうな兵隊さんでした

体を寄せ合い交わすは心もとろける甘いキス
腕を絡ませて歩いていく姿はまるで兄と妹です
腕を絡ませ歩いていくと着いたところは川のほとり
そろって腰を掛け聞こえてくるのはナイチンゲール

兵隊さんは立派なフィドルをリュックから出し
これ以上ない楽しくなるような曲を奏でます
谷間に鳴り響くほど楽しくなるような曲を奏でて
ナイチンゲールの歌とともにうっすら涙を浮かべます

これから7年もインドに行くことになるので
ワインやウィスキーばかりでビールが飲めない
ここに戻ってくるとしても春になるだろうが
腰でも掛けてナイチンゲールの歌を聞こう

そのときでいいので結婚してくれますかの声に
いや無理だ、どうしてもできないと兵隊さん
国の故郷で妻がひとり待っている
しかもまばゆいばかりの最高の美女だ
