マタイによる福音書6章29節にこんな一節があります。

And yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.
（だが言っておく、栄華を極めたソロモン王でさえここにあるどれとも同じように装ってはいなかった。）

そして、この歌の中にこんな一節があります。

King Solomon’s glory so famed in story was far outshone by the lilies guise
（物語であれほど有名なソロモン王の栄光はユリの装いにその輝きが負けていた）

また、同じく19章24節に、

Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.
（また言っておく、金持ちが神の国に入るのと比べたらラクダが一頭針穴を通り抜けるほうが簡単である。）

とあります。神の国には金を持っていくな、いや、金を持っては神の国に行けぬ、ということでしょうか。

曲中の
“the scripture’s camel missed the needle’s eye and so came to ground”
（経典のラクダは針穴を見失い、地に来た）
も24節があってのことでしょう。

まあ、言ってみれば、「セコセコ金を貯めてどうする。宵越しの金をもってどうする。飲み代に使っちまおうぜ。さあ飲もう、飲もう。」みたいな「くよくよするな的な」前向きな歌です。少なくとも下界にいる無神論者の私にとってはそう聞こえます。

過去は過ぎ去ったものですし、未来は未だ来たらぬもの、心配してもはじまりません。今日を生きることにします。

タイトルの「プラブサノール」はアイルランド語(Gaeilge)です。愛和辞典を持っていないために英語を介しますが、”preab(spring) san(in the) ól(drink)” つまり、「酒浸しになろう」みたいな感じだと思います。

ルーク・ケリー(Luke Kelly: 1940-1984)とキアラン・バーク(Ciaran Bourke: 1935-1988)が交互に歌うのですが、キアラン・バークはアイルランド語で歌っています。

話にも有名なソロモン王の栄華も
ユリの装いには遠く及ばないが
強風は野原にも庭にも吹き荒れ
許しを請うようにユリは枯れる

人生など艱難辛苦のまがいもの
弓矢は一度放たれればそれっきり
さあみんな人生に停止はないから
なみなみ注ごう、もう一杯

貪欲な行商人は貧困者を盲にし
下劣な怒鳴り声でとっとと金だせ
なんたる悪事か法外の値段だ
二束三文に倍額の請求をするのか

こぶがじゃまになり経典のらくだは
針穴を見失ってこの地に下りてきた
服があるのになぜ金に惹かれるのか
ズボンがずり落ちないよう、もう一杯
